Which Generation is Greener?

The Rexel Foundation recently published a study on energy efficiency habits in the United States and around the world, with some very interesting findings.

The report found that younger generations are more likely to be interested in energy efficiency vs. their older counterparts. In particular, they asked different age groups if they plan to pursue “active technology-driven” energy efficient upgrades in the next five years. The following percentages said yes:

68% of 18-24 year olds

68% of 25-34 year olds

52% of 35-49 year olds

44% of 50-64 year olds

28% of  people 65 years+

The Results Make Sense

And, when you think about it, this seems to make sense.  Those who fall into the 18-34 year old demographic grew up with technology, and they’re more comfortable using new and more advanced solutions when available.  You could also argue that younger people are more concerned about the environment, and about the long-term effects that wasted energy will have on their futures.

Longer Amortization for Younger People

Younger people who invest in (maybe more expensive) technical solutions will tend to see the investment as one worth making, with the cost of the investment amortized over their lives. They think about lower energy bills over a longer period of time.  And they feel good about doing something “green”.

Older Generations Very Interested in Energy Efficiency

But even though a higher percentage of younger people reported that they would be interested in technology-driven solutions, the numbers are still promising, with even 44% of 50-64 years olds looking to new technologies to help them become more energy efficient.

Even Better Results When Other Measures Included

And these solutions don’t include passive measures – things like energy audits, upgrading insulation, changing light fixtures, and other simple measures.  When these passive measures are taken into consideration, the percentage of respondents who will pursue greater energy efficiency in their homes goes up substantially.

This study proves that Americans understand the importance of energy efficiency in their homes, and the benefits it provides for both the environment and their wallets.
