Forced-Air Heating Systems

forced air heatingA forced-air heating system uses ductwork to deliver air that has been heated by a furnace to all the living spaces in your home. Supply ducts bring fresh warm air to different rooms, and return ducts meet at a central air handler which moves air back to the furnace or heat exchanger for reheating.

A forced-air heating system can be used with many different types of heating equipment, such as oil or gas-fired furnaces, a heat pump, or from an oil or gas-fired boiler. The boiler works a little differently than the others because it has a heating coil installed in an air handler, and hot water is circulated through the coil. When forced-air heating systems use hot water, they are often called hydro-air systems.

What's Your Furnace's Efficiency Rating?

A furnace burns fuel to warm air, and then pumps that warm air through ducts all around your house. The efficiency rating is the percentage of heat that actually gets transferred into the air around the house, versus being lost through the chimney, air vents or leaky ducts.

If your furnace is 60% efficient, then 40% of the heat is being lost. If you upgrade to a new furnace that is 95% efficient, only 5% of the heat is lost, decreasing your energy bills because you are using more of the heat that is generated instead of losing it to the outside. The benefit of forced-air systems is that they can deliver air quickly to areas of the house where it is needed. However, a major drawback of forced-air systems is that the blowing air can carry dust and other allergens, and can be problematic for people who have respiratory issues.

Another common concern with ductwork is leaky ducts. Leaks in ductwork make them much less efficient at carrying warmed and cooled air to the areas of the house were it is required, and it invites in unwanted stale air from basements, attics and crawl spaces to be distributed to the rest of the home. Your home energy audit proved to be very informative and helpful. I was not aware of the updraft created inside our walls because of the balloon framing construction. You said that that can cause heat to be pulled out of the house with the draft going up inside the walls and should be re-mediated. You also said that the attic insulation was insufficient and that fiberglass batts can leave spaces for around the edges causing heat loss and that it should have blown in insulation on top of what was there to seal the whole attic and increase the R factor. Thank You for all your advice and expertise. You made me aware of things I should consider and did the upgrades. I can already see the difference on my utility bills!
